💊 Europe Says “Almost Yes” to Lilly’s Foundayo Pill

On Oct. 16, the European Medicines Agency’s drug committee recommended approving Eli Lilly’s once-daily oral GLP-1, Foundayo (orforglipron), for weight management and type 2 diabetes in adults. The European Commission still has to give the final sign-off. If it does, Foundayo would be the second weight-loss pill backed in the EU after Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pill. Foundayo has been on sale in the U.S. since April and in the UK since August.

📈 CagriSema’s Numbers Look Bigger for Women

Novo Nordisk shared new after-the-fact analyses of its late-stage REDEFINE 1 trial of CagriSema, an experimental weekly shot that pairs semaglutide with cagrilintide. Women in the trial lost about 25% of their body weight on average at 68 weeks, assuming everyone stayed on treatment, and results held up across pre-, peri- and postmenopausal groups. Novo says these analyses only generate hypotheses and need more study. CNBC reports the drug is expected to launch early next year.

⚠️ Compounded Tirzepatide Recall

Compounding pharmacy Apothecary Pharma voluntarily recalled 22 lots of its compounded tirzepatide, a copycat of Lilly’s Zepbound, saying it couldn’t fully guarantee the product’s safety. The FDA classified it as a Class II recall. The recall comes as Lilly and Novo keep pushing, in court and elsewhere, to shut down the market for knockoff GLP-1s.

Retailers and food makers are adding protein-focused foods and smaller portion sizes in response.

🤰 New ACOG Guidance on GLP-1s, Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

On Oct. 23, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists released a practice advisory to help ob-gyns counsel patients about GLP-1s before, during and after pregnancy. The group says there isn’t enough safety data yet. It advises against use during pregnancy and suggests clinicians discuss stopping a month or two before conception, since many of these drugs take a while to leave the body. For breastfeeding, ACOG recommends shared decision-making, with specific cautions for newborns and preterm infants.
